The best Masai Mara safari accommodation depends on your budget, how much privacy you want, and how close you want to sleep to the wildlife. A full-service lodge inside the reserve suits first-timers and families. A tented bush camp suits couples on a short luxury trip. A conservancy camp suits travelers who want fewer vehicles and the option of walking safaris. A budget camp near a gate suits anyone who cares more about lions than thread count.
The trouble is that listings blur all of this together. Safari lodges in Masai Mara range from simple tents to suites with plunge pools. Rates are quoted per person, per room, per night or per trip, so two prices that look comparable often are not.
This article sorts the choices into four types of stay, gives you real from-prices where we have them, and ends with a plain way to decide between sleeping inside or outside the reserve. We are a Nairobi-based operator that has planned private Kenya safaris since 2007, and the first two stays below come straight from our own itineraries.
1. Mara Serena Safari Lodge for a comfortable first safari
What the stay is like
Mara Serena Safari Lodge is a full-service lodge inside the reserve. It is the safest pick among safari lodges in the Masai Mara if you want comfort without guesswork. Sleeping inside the boundary means your game drives begin without a gate transfer first. We use it across several private itineraries:

- 4-day Masai Mara safari, three nights at the lodge, from $990
- 7-day luxury safari through Amboseli, Lake Naivasha and the Mara, three nights at the lodge, from $1,944
- 6-day Amboseli and Mara fly-in safari, three nights at the lodge, from $2,908
Cost and who it suits
A simple comparison: the 4-day trip from $990 over three nights works out to about $330 per night for the whole safari, not just the bed. Ask your quote to spell out what that price includes. This stay suits first-timers, families and couples who want a classic Mara trip at a moderate price.
If you would rather stay in a lodge brand across several parks, our 7-day Premium Kenya Sopa Lodges safari starts from $2,391 with meals included.
A lodge inside the reserve is the easiest way to buy a first Mara safari without surprises.
2. Soroi Mara Bush Camp for a short luxury trip
What the stay is like
Soroi Mara Bush Camp is the base for our 4-day Ultra-Luxury Kenya Flying Safari, which spends two nights at the camp and adds Lake Nakuru. You fly from Nairobi to the Mara, so you skip the long road transfer and spend that time on game drives. Ground transport is a pop-up roof Land Cruiser.

Do not confuse a luxury bush camp with a masai mara camping safari. Camping usually means basic tents and shared facilities. A bush camp at this level is a tented stay built for comfort. Before you book any camp, ask about the tent type, the bathroom and the power supply.
- Format: tented bush camp, two nights
- Getting there: flight from Nairobi to the Mara
- Extra stop: Lake Nakuru
Cost and who it suits
The trip starts from $2,070 for four days and three nights. That is about $690 per night of trip, flight included. The price is higher than the lodge route because the flight and the private, privacy-focused setup are baked in. It suits couples and travelers with only four days who want luxury, privacy and wildlife without a long drive.
Pay for a fly-in bush camp when your time is short, not when your budget is.
3. Conservancy camps for privacy and luxury
What the stay is like
Conservancies are private Maasai-owned lands that border the reserve. They cap vehicle numbers, and camps there can offer walking safaris and night drives, which the reserve does not allow. This is where most luxury safari Masai Mara itineraries end up. Examples include Mara Plains Camp in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, the tented Mahali Mzuri, and Angama Mara with its hilltop views and floor-to-ceiling glass.

At the top end, The Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp has 20 suites with private decks, plunge pools and butler service. Fairmont Mara Safari Club offers 38 tented rooms.
Cost and who it suits
Published rates for this tier start around $650 per person per night in low season and reach about $1,350 in high season. High season is roughly July to October, when the Great Migration is in the Mara. Three nights would cost about $1,950 per person at the low rate and $4,050 at the high rate, before flights and extras.
Check what is included: meals, drives, conservancy fees and transfers. This tier suits honeymooners, photographers and repeat visitors who want space and quiet.
Conservancy camps sell exclusivity, so judge them by vehicle limits and activities, not by thread count.
4. Budget camps and group safaris for lower cost
What the stay is like
The cheapest way into the Mara is our budget group safari: you share a vehicle and a guide with other travelers. Budget camps and lodges tend to cluster just outside the reserve gates, around places like Talek. Expect simpler tents and fewer extras.
- Shared vehicle and one guide
- Basic comfort, strong focus on wildlife
Cost and who it suits
This is the lowest-priced Masai Mara option we plan, and prices move with season and group size, so request a quote for your dates. The trade-off is control. In a shared vehicle you cannot linger at a sighting on your own schedule. It suits anyone for whom lions matter more than comfort. Families with young children and photographers usually do better in a private vehicle.
The savings in a budget safari come from sharing, so be sure you can live with a shared schedule.
Inside or outside the reserve: how to decide
Side-by-side comparison
Staying inside the reserve gets you shorter drives to sightings and the earliest starts. Staying outside costs less and gives you more choice, but you add a gate transfer each day. The table sets the four stays side by side.
| Stay | Location | Cost signal | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mara Serena Safari Lodge | Inside the reserve | 4 days from $990 (about $330 per night) | First-timers, families |
| Soroi Mara Bush Camp | Confirm when you book | 4 days from $2,070 (about $690 per night) | Short luxury trips |
| Conservancy camps | Private land beside the reserve | About $650 to $1,350 per person per night | Privacy, walking, night drives |
| Budget camps and group safaris | Usually outside the gates | Lowest price tier | Tight budgets |
How to decide
Choose by drive time to the gate and to the herds, not by inside versus outside alone. During the Migration, a camp close to the river crossings can beat a lodge farther away. Ask your operator for the daily drive time, and whether park fees sit in the quote or on top. Book months ahead for July to October.
Ask how long the drive to the action takes, because the boundary line matters less than that number.
Pick the stay that fits your trip
A lodge inside the reserve works for most first safaris. A fly-in bush camp suits a short luxury break, a conservancy camp suits privacy, and a shared budget safari suits a tight budget. Compare stays by cost per night of the whole trip and by drive time to the wildlife, and check what each quote includes.
