The best Tanzania family safari packages are private trips with a flexible pace, manageable drive days and a route that puts wildlife in front of your children early. For a first trip with school-age kids, a 7- or 8-day itinerary through the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti is the sweet spot. If you want the Great Wildebeest Migration, choose the 9-day trip. If you want more time and comfort, take the 10-day luxury safari.
Comparing Tanzania family safari tours is harder than it should be, because operators quote in different ways. One published 8-day family itinerary starts at $4,999 USD, while other operators price by the night, from around $500 per person at mid-range lodges to $1,200 or more at the luxury end. Without inclusions side by side, you cannot tell which number is actually cheaper.
We are Extra Miles Unique Adventures, a Kenya-based tour operator that has planned East Africa safaris since 2007. Below are four of our private Kenya and Tanzania packages, from shortest to longest, each with its route, from-price and the family it suits. A final section shows how to compare any quote, including prices, timing, safety and packing.
1. 7-Day Epic Kenya & Tanzania Safari
The 7-day Epic safari is the lowest-priced way into Tanzania on our list, from $2,063. It suits families with about a week who want a first safari without a long itinerary.
Itinerary and highlights
The trip pairs the open plains of Amboseli with the wildlife-rich northern Tanzania circuit. It is a private safari built around your dates, comfort level and travel style.
- Duration: 7 days, 6 nights
- Route: Amboseli, then northern Tanzania
- Pace: flexible
- From-price: $2,063
A short route works for families only when the drive days stay short.
Who it suits and what it costs
This package fits first-time families with school-age children who tire on long drives. Because it crosses between two countries in a week, ask how the border day is structured and how many hours you spend in the vehicle.
Treat the from-price as a starting point. Confirm whether it is per person, which group size it assumes, and how children are priced. Share your kids' ages when you request the quote.
2. 8-Day Magical Kenya & Tanzania Safari
The 8-day Magical safari covers the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti on a Kenya and Tanzania route, from $2,711. It is the best balance of time and price for most families.

Itinerary and highlights
You get Mount Kilimanjaro views, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti plains and the Masai Mara in one private trip. Two countries means two different ecosystems without rushing.
- Duration: 8 days, 7 nights
- Route: Kilimanjaro views, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Masai Mara
- Pace: flexible
- From-price: $2,711
One extra night over the 7-day trip buys you the Serengeti and Ngorongoro without a rushed itinerary.
Who it suits and what it costs
Choose this if you want both Kenya and Tanzania and your children can handle some full game-drive days. The Ngorongoro Crater is especially good for younger kids, since animals are concentrated on a compact crater floor and sightings come quickly.
Compared with the 7-day trip, you pay roughly $650 more at the from-price level. You gain an extra night and the Masai Mara, which is usually worth it if your dates allow.
3. 9-Day Ultimate Kenya and Tanzania Safari Experience
The 9-day Ultimate safari is built around the Great Wildebeest Migration, from $3,429. It suits families with older children who want big-herd scenes.

Itinerary and highlights
The route covers the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru. It is a private safari with a flexible pace, aimed at Big Five sightings, migration country and Kilimanjaro views in one journey.
- Duration: 9 days
- Route: Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru
- Tour type: private safari
- From-price: $3,429
Migration trips depend on the herds, so fix your dates with the operator before you book flights.
Who it suits and what it costs
This one rewards teenagers and patient children who enjoy long days looking for action. Herds move with the rains, so ask which part of the Serengeti the itinerary targets for your travel month and what the plan is if the herds are elsewhere.
At $3,429 it costs about $720 more than the 8-day trip at the from-price level. The extra day adds Lake Nakuru and more time on the plains.
4. The Grand East African Luxury Safari
The Grand East African Luxury Safari is our 10-day comfort option, from $5,405. It suits families who want more time in the wilderness without rushing between parks.

Itinerary and highlights
This private luxury trip visits the Masai Mara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. All transport is by pop-up roof 4x4 Land Cruiser, which lets everyone stand and watch or photograph from the vehicle.
- Duration: 10 days, 9 nights
- Route: Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater
- Transport: pop-up roof 4x4 Land Cruiser
- From-price: $5,405
Nine nights spread over three destinations gives children rest days, and rest days make the trip work.
Who it suits and what it costs
It fits multigenerational groups and families who want room to slow down. Ask for lodge details, room layouts for your family size and any age rules for activities.
At $5,405 it is the premium choice. Compare it with published luxury rates of $1,200 or more per person per night: a 10-day luxury itinerary at that rate would cost far more per person.
How to compare family safari packages and quotes
Compare packages on inclusions and the basis of the price, not on the headline number. Then check timing, safety and packing, because those decide whether your children enjoy the trip.
Prices and inclusions to check
Three questions settle most comparisons: is the price per person or per group, are international flights included, and what do park fees, guides and meals cover? Most safari packages price the land portion only, so confirm flights before you compare a package with an "all-inclusive" one.
| Benchmark | Listed price |
|---|---|
| Published 8-day family itinerary (private 7-seat 4x4, guides, some meals) | From $4,999 USD |
| Mid-range lodges, priced by the night | About $500 per person per night |
| Luxury camps, priced by the night | From $1,200 per person per night |
| Our four packages, 7 to 10 days | $2,063 to $5,405 from-price |
For a family of four on a 7-night trip, mid-range nightly pricing works out to 4 × 7 × $500 = $14,000, and luxury to 4 × 7 × $1,200 = $33,600. Our 7-day Epic from-price, if quoted per person, would be 4 × $2,063 = $8,252. Confirm that basis on your own quote.
A cheap from-price tells you nothing until you know what it includes and who it is quoted for.
Timing, safety and packing for kids
The best month depends on what you want. January to March brings calving season in the southern Serengeti. Late June to October is the dry season, with easier sightings and, roughly from July, the northern river crossings.
For safety, check the US State Department travel advisory for Tanzania before booking. Ask a travel clinic about malaria prevention and vaccines for every child. As for clothing, you can wear black, but you should not, since tsetse flies in parts of the Serengeti and Tarangire are drawn to black and dark blue. Pack khaki, olive and tan instead.
Picking the right trip for your family
For most families, the 8-day trip is the safest first choice, the 7-day trip is the budget route, the 9-day trip is for migration chasers, and the 10-day luxury safari is for those who want space and comfort. Whichever you choose, fix the price basis, the inclusions and the drive lengths before you pay.
If you are ready to plan, request a tailored quote with your dates, your children's ages and your budget. We reply within 24 hours and refine the itinerary with you until it fits your family.
